A New Year, A New Chance to Make A Difference

Dear Friends,

The new year has just begun, and I have to tell you our kids are already showing us how much they can flourish if we give them the opportunity and room to grow. To start with, three of our 8th graders just received a tremendous honor from a local organization (read more below). I am also thrilled to announce some new locations for TAF classes starting this month:

Our NEW Genesee Learning Space - We moved out of our TechCenter in Judkins Park to a bigger, brighter location on the corner of Rainier and Oregon that meets the growing needs of our TechStart and TTIP students. (Stay tuned for details about an Open House next month)

3 NEW TechStart locations - Classes started at Totem Middle School in Federal Way and Bryant Manor and MLK Apartments in Seattle, allowing us to serve up to 260 K-8 students this year.

I look forward to updating you with all the exciting news at TAF in 2008. By working together, we can make this a groundbreaking year of success for our kids.

Warmly,

Trish Millines Dziko
Executive Director

WSA Awards Student Leaders
TechStart students recognized by WA tech organization
WSA, the state's oldest and largest technology trade organization, recently announced 21 finalists for its 13th annual Industry Achievement Awards (IAA), an event which recognizes local companies, agencies and individuals who best demonstrate innovation and excellence in technology.

Three of this year's finalists—competing for the title of Technology Leader of Tomorrow—come from TAF's 6-8th grade TechStart classes:

Jennifer Chen, 8th grade, Washington Middle School
Travis Duell, 8th grade, Madison Middle School
William Yip, 8th grade, Washington Middle School

This is the first year the WSA has included this award category. All three finalists, selected for their technical skills and leadership, will receive a college scholarship ($1,000 for the winner, $750 for the runners-up) and will be recognized at the Industry Achievement Awards. One winner, selected by the WSA community through online voting, will be announced at the event.

This year's IAA event, which attracts more than 1,000 business and community leaders each year, will take place February 7, 2008 at the Westin Hotel in Seattle. Suzie Reider, Director of Advertising at YouTube.com, will be the keynote speaker. Click here if you would like to register to attend or learn more about the event.

Congratulations Jennifer, Travis and William!
You are an inspiration to everyone at TAF!

America's Best High Schools
November 2007 - U.S News & World Report ranks schools on student outcomes
U.S. News & World Report recently released a study of America's public high schools, ranking them on student performance and college readiness. The study acknowledges from the start that minority and economically disadvantaged students are being left behind in greater numbers. Taking that fact into account, the study finds evidence that some schools are making progress. Two Seattle schools on the list—Garfield HS and Roosevelt HS—both achieved Silver medal status because of their relative success getting students ready for college.

The study underscores that there is still much room for improvement, and that schools that are innovative about how they meet the individual needs of their students can break through. TAF understands that, and TAF Academy in Federal Way will be part of the solution. Browse the full report...
