About TechStart
TechStart is a free after-school program for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. The focus of TechStart is providing technology and academic education to underserved children of color. TechStart students learn technology tools through projects-based approaches to learning. While working on projects, students learn valuable computer and communication skills, as well as other life-skills such as planning, working in groups, fulfilling goals, and presenting information to even bigger groups.
TechStart kids make a year-long commitment to the program. During Fall, Winter and Spring sessions, they explore scientific reasoning, technology tools, engineering, math concepts and practices, writing and other communication techniques.
Classes are designed to be age-appropriate for each age. The goal is to challenge students while encouraging a love of learning by making learning fun.

The TechStart Model
In our TechStart program, students become proficient in problem-solving through data analysis and team projects. Teachers work with confidence-building models to help kids master core subjects, including math, science and writing. Students learn to communicate effectively through creative research, writing and public speaking assignments. They master software applications that facilitate learning and communication. All of our teaching modules prepare students to embrace real-life challenges and opportunities.
The TechStart elementary school experience builds a solid foundation for middle and high school and gets kids excited for future successes in higher education. By the time TechStart students begin their middle school years, they are confident, eager and ready to enter TAF Academy, our full-day school for grades 6-12.
