Volunteers

We are so grateful for the time and talent that TAF volunteers donate each year.

"But don’t I need to be a computer whiz?” is what many people ask before thinking about volunteering.

The answer is: Absolutely not!

TAF volunteers support our hard-working staff in a variety of ways using a wide range of skills:

  • Assisting teachers in classrooms
  • Supporting our staff at TAF events
  • Helping with projects around the TAF offices

The most important thing about volunteering is that you have a great TAF experience. We value every moment you commit to TAF. And we hope you become part of our family for years to come!

TechStart Classroom Assistant

A classroom assistant supports students by engaging them in the curriculum and working with students one-on-one to facilitate their understanding of classroom exercises. Volunteers also support the Lead Instructor by ans wering questions, keeping students on task and determining which students need extra help in the areas of math and reading. This position is ideal for volunteers who enjoy working with younger children, are passionate about technology, and are looking to be part of a dynamic and diverse learning community.

To volunteer at TAF, follow these simple steps:

  1. Download the Volunteer Application (PDF)

  2. E-mail your completed application to volunteer@techaccess.org

  3. After we review your application there are just three more steps to starting your volunteer experience:

    1. Schedule your volunteer orientation. TAF will call you to set up an orientation session so that we can learn more about your background, skills and volunteer preferences.

    2. Attend a training session. TAF’s trainings are designed to help you be more effective in your role as a Volunteer. The Volunteer Coordinator will schedule a training that is convenient for your schedule.

    3. Get involved. TAF will call you when an appropriate volunteer opportunity is identified. You can choose whether or not the opportunity is right for you.

Is your department at work or community group looking for a group volunteer project? Adopting a TechStart classroom is a great way to give back to the community.

  • Each volunteer group should have 3-5 people
  • Designate one group member as your Lead Volunteer to be the central point of contact
  • Each group member will have their own schedule for the ten week session
  • If a volunteer cannot make their scheduled class, they should notify the Lead Volunteer
  • The Lead Volunteer will contact other group members to fill the vacancy

How long have
you been a
TAF volunteer?

6 months

What brought
you to TAF?

I read about TAF in a newspaper article over a decade ago and was inspired by what I read. I knew then I wanted to one day volunteer at TAF when my work schedule would allow. I moved to the community near the Rainier learning center a few years ago, and this past winter I started volunteering as a TechStart teaching assistant. I love it!

What do you enjoy about volunteering?
I enjoy helping the kids realize that they can figure things out on their own. I enjoy it when they get that 'A-HA!' look in their eyes when they learn new things. Working with them each week is both challenging and fun.

What do you like to do when not volunteering with TAF?
I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and two Morkie (Yorkie/Maltese) puppies. I do photography and painting in my free time, am currently training for triathlons, and on any given week I kayak, skateboard around Alki with friends and occasionally take a surfing trip to the coast.
