Google hosts Technology Leaders of Tomorrow

March 2010 - At the WTIA Industry Achievement Awards on March 4, the business community honored three TechStart students whose exemplary work made them Technology Leaders of Tomorrow.
The top scholarship went to this year's deserving winner, Ruby Damper, but all three of the nominees will receive a private tour of Google's Seattle headquarters. A first-hand look behind the scenes of the technology giant will provide major inspiration to Ruby, Sasu and Geneva as they make choices about their college and career paths.

Qwest Foundation connects with TechStart
December 2009 - TechStart students are growing up in a high-tech world full of opportunities thanks to the Qwest Foundation. For the last four years, the company has made grants to support TAF’s K-8th grade program, and their long-term interesthas produced results. The TechStart program is thriving with eight sites serving over 250 students.

This year we will expand the use of Moodle, an open source learning management system. Teachers will be able to collaborate on curriculum and track student progress more thoroughly, giving TechStart students access to the academic foundation we know they deserve.
Thanks to the ongoing support of the Qwest Foundation, the TechStart program will continue to grow.
Citigroup targets college readiness
November 2009 –The Citi Foundation has made a major commitment to TAF Academy’s College Readiness Program, ensuring that every student will be prepared for college entrance and college excellence.
This year’s $15,000 grant will have a major impact on the future success of our students.
A majority of these funds will be dedicated to TAF Academy's afterschool programs. Students will be offered a variety of academic enrichment classes, from SAT prep to computer programming, that build their college resumes. For students working below grade level, TAF Academy will require that they participate in academic support classes after school.
The grant will also support the following:
- A College & Career Specialist, who ensures that every student at TAF Academy maintains an “Academic Plan” that maps out their pathway to college
- Transportation for at least one college field trip during the 2009-10 academic year
We are grateful to Citi Foundation for their generous support of our students!

REI contributes to TAF Academy lesson plans
September 2009 - TAF Academy 9th Graders are kicking off the school year with a project about Career Awareness. Their goal is to build a learning community at TAF Academy where all students understand educational choices needed for their chosen career paths.
Their first assignment: Meet with REI CEO Sally Jewell on September 11 for an indoor adventure exploring REI's corporate headquarters.
After meeting with Jewell, the students had a chance to interview a panel of employees from different departments about their college and career paths. Students toured the warehouse where products like sleeping bags are developed and tested for durability. They also visited the photo studio where staff photographers were busy taking pictures of models wearing the company’s products for use in catalogs.

UPS makes gift to support TechStart
Here's what brown did for the TAF.
UPS, which got its start in Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood 101 years ago, has made a $13,500 gift to TAF to support its free after-school TechStart program at the Genesee Learning Space.
UPS has been an avid supporter of TAF over the years. Last year, a team of employees volunteered weekly in Derya Baykent’s Geocaching class. (Volunteers Harry Smith and Tom Stewart pictured at right)
UPS also hired a few of TAF’s teens in the Technical Teen Internship program in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In fact, you may have heard one of our TTIP alumni, Roni Ho, speak at this year’s Leadership Breakfast. UPS hired Roni as a summer intern while he was in high school. He graduated from West Seattle High School in 2000 and was hired full-time at UPS. Roni is currently a Sr. Technician supporting the Redmond area and attending Cascadia Community College pursing an Applied Science degree in Web Application.
